What Books Mean To Me

Deepanshu Raju

As we grow older, which has just happened, and has happened again,

In all this, people and places changed but Books remained the same!

Books are what’s misfortune is to orphan and what’s innocence is to fire,

How so much treasury knowledge it can contain, I always used to admire.

Just as justice loves to sit and watch while everything goes wrong,
Right from childhood I loved books and had the habit of reading prolong.
As the banana peel loves the shoe of a man who was struck by a shingle falling,
C'mon! don’t leave me unread in between, I could hear my Books calling!

In effort to recollect my early reading, instead remember smells of places,

At the time when there were less games and books occupied most of the spaces.

From teaching grammar and rhymes to the complex spiritual life lessons,

Used to sit in Grandma’s laps and never used to miss my reading sessions.

Until all the codes are written and hearts have been broken,

Books will continue to open the treasure and carry the words unspoken.

Although I can’t imagine that last occurrence, no matter how hard I try,

Yet not men, Books stay alive forever and that we all can’t deny!
